As far as I am concerned with the -Dsun.java2d.opengl switch all that Java does it to change the default graphics pipeline (which seems to be ancient on linux) to the OpenGL implementation that is offered to it by the underlying system. So, if the OpenGL implementation and graphics drivers are up and working, it should use hardware acceleration accordingly.

Arch Linux 64 bit. Sun Java (Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10))

OpenGL works fine on my system, with the binary AMD drivers. Other Java apps that use 3d (See: Minecraft) work fine, and fast.

Via the website/embedded version- everythings' fine until the game starts, then it drops to about 1 fps.

In the downlodable edition (java -Dsun.java2d.opengl=true -client -Xms128m -Xmx512m -jar $path/bin/bootstrap.jar -jar bin/creeptd-launcher.jar) - I get a grey screen.

Edit - if I disable that opengl=true chunk, I get the same behavior in the standalone as I do in the web - unplayably slow performance, but it does 'work'
